Female pilots compete in Air Race Classic

June 22, 2015

On Monday afternoon, 123 female pilots descended from the skies at Clark County Airport in the midst of the Air Race Classic. Racers fly through 10 designated stops — more than 2,500 miles in four days — on a quest for the fastest time.

The Clark County Airport is the third stop on a journey from Fredericksburg, Va., to Fairhope, Ala. The last time the Air Race Classic stopped in the Louisville area was 1981.

The race was started in 1929 by women for female pilots like Amelia Earhart, who flew in the race. The aircrafts are manned by two or three women who take shifts navigating their path.
